30.6.2020 Pentagon reacts to alleged cooperation between Russia and Taliban to kill U.S. forces
The Department of Defense (Pentagon) reacted to the alleged reports which
suggest that the Russian Intelligence Unit paid Taliban to kill the U.S.
forces inAfghanistan.

“The Department of Defense continues to evaluate intelligence that Russian
GRU operatives were engaged in malign activity against United States and
coalition forces in Afghanistan,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan
Hoffman said in a statement.

Hoffman further added “To date, DOD has no corroborating evidence to
validate the recent allegations found in open-source reports. Regardless,
we always take the safety and security of our forces in Afghanistan — and
around the world — most seriously and therefore continuously adopt
measures to prevent harm from potential threats.”

A Russian spy unit paid members of Afghanistan’s Taliban movement to
conduct lethal attacks on U.S. troops in that country, according to a
classified American intelligence assessment, cited in a report by Fox

The report further added that the assessment of the role played by
Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, in fostering attacks on
American soldiers, comes as President Trump is pushing the Pentagon to
withdraw a significant portion of U.S. forces from Afghanistan and as U.S.
diplomats try to forge a peace accord involving the Taliban and the
U.S.-backed Afghan government.

The intelligence assessment regarding Russia’s actions in Afghanistan was
delivered to the White House earlier this spring, and until recently had
been known only to a handful of officials, a person familiar with it said.
