12.7.2019    Taliban dominate Badghes – Herat highway

The Badghes residents have been stranded as the Taliban continue to dominate the main highway linking the province with Herat. The local civil society blamed the provincial administration, particularly the security officials for not doing enough to resolve this crisis. They demanded the government to urgently launch a security operation here to clear this main highway. Abdul Aziz Baig, chairman provincial council, acknowledged the grim situation on the Badghes – Herat highway. He said the residents cannot freely travel on this key route. However, Abdul Ghafoor Malakzai, provincial governor, discarded the reports about the Taliban having a full control over the highway. He added the insurgents only show-up on the highway and run away after stay for few hours. He added fresh troops of army and the uprising force have been deployed on this highway to ensure security. Badghes is among the insecure provinces in the west of the country where Bala Murghab district alone briefly fell twice to the Taliban. It is said the Taliban have heavy presence in many of its districts.
